We are delighted to bring you a Member Interview with Jemma Robertson, Managing Director, GRA
What’s your golden rule?
Always keep your word. If you say you’re going to do something, do it and do it properly.
Who has been your biggest influence?
My dad. He taught me (literally) everything I know about marketing and the importance of delivering a robust strategy underpinned by great creative ideas and excellent client service. I also saw first-hand how difficult things can be when they don’t always go to plan, and the volatility that comes with owning and running an agency. He shaped my whole career and, although I run the business in my own way, the foundations he instilled still guide our culture and overall mission.
What is your most hated business expression?
"We don't know, what we don't know' - it's so stupid! Also, any image/graphic/icon of a rocket - it's so overdone!
What’s the smartest business idea you’ve ever had?
If I told you that, I would need to kill you!
Which leader do you admire most and why?
There are so many. Sir Alex Ferguson, he got the best out of people, even when they didn’t know they had it in them, and he set relentlessly high standards without ever compromising on them.
What is on your mind the most right now as a marketing leader?
Building a team and culture that can keep delivering exceptional work as the industry moves faster, technology advances rapidly and expectations keep rising.
Why is being part of The Marketing Society important for your career?
It’s such a brilliant community, full of like-minded people you can share ideas with and connect to all facing the same highs, lows and challenges.
Why does marketing matter to you?
Because we’re essentially shaping the way consumers think and convincing them to do something, whether that’s purchasing something they’ll love, using a great service provider, or getting valuable help and advice. As marketers, that power is in our hands, and that’s pretty cool if you ask me.
Tell us something that’s not on your CV
I have very few talents or hobbies, but I can hula hoop for hours on end. Surprisingly impressive, completely impractical.
