We are delighted to bring you a Member Interview with Julie McConnell, Business Development and Marketing Director, Brodies LLP Solicitors
What’s your golden rule?
Something I always tell my three girls and try to live by myself is: be brave, be kind, be bold, be wise, and always follow through with promises.
Kindness is a simple concept, yet it’s so often overlooked always lead with empathy. Equally, it’s important to do what you say you’ll do. Consistency builds trust, and trust is everything to me in both business and life.
Who has been your biggest influence?
I’ve been lucky to work with some brilliant people over the years from all around the world. One standout is Jacquelyn Maclennan, a senior partner on the Executive Committee of my previous law firm. Despite being a seriously high-profile figure, she always had time for people. She spoke about the importance of believing in yourself and rising above negativity. She left a lasting impression on me.
Influence comes from all directions, though. My family—my parents, grandparents, siblings, husband, and friends—have all shaped who I am. One of my grandmothers (now almost 90 years old) used to climb out of her bedroom window onto the stairwell to attend secretarial school, defying expectations to carve out a career for herself. My other grandmother was a draftswoman in an office full of men. This all happened at a time when young women were expected to quickly earn a weekly wage, marry, and then stay at home. That kind of grit and determination is something I carry with me and hope to pass on to my daughters and my team.
What is your most hated business expression?
“Let’s circle back.” I’m guilty of using it too, but it makes me cringe! It usually means we’re avoiding a decision. I’m a big fan of pushing ahead—clarity and momentum matter. If something needs action, let’s get it done. (Although my husband might disagree when I try to book our next holiday the moment we get home from the last one!)
What’s the smartest business idea you’ve ever had?
My first business idea was selling Scottish tablet and drawings I have sketched out of our neighbours’ houses on the street with my sister when I was five. I probably just about made enough for a few 1p sweets at the local shop!
In professional services at least, great ideas are rarely the work of one person—they’re always a team effort. One of the most impactful initiatives I’ve been part of recently was ‘Being Brodies: Live!’, which took place in June this year. It was our firm’s first-ever full-day, all-colleague event, bringing together around 700 employees from across our offices. We hosted guest speakers, client panellists, and immersive sessions—all curated to reinforce our culture and values and to celebrate what makes us proud to be part of Brodies. Bringing the event together involved almost every team in the firm – all led by our amazing events manager, Dawn Stanley. The day was all about connection, culture, and shared purpose and created a real sense of belonging and pride.
From a business perspective, happy colleagues who enjoy what they do can transform both the business and their own careers.
Which leader do you admire most and why?
Jacinda Ardern. She has an ability to lead with empathy, strength, and authenticity - this is something that I really admire. She showed the world that compassion and decisiveness can go hand in hand—and that’s a powerful example for any leader.
What is on your mind the most right now as a marketing leader?
How we continue to create meaningful, human connections in an increasingly digital world. Whether through personalised training, campaigns, client experiences, or internal comms, it’s about making people feel seen, heard, and valued. Clients need to know we’re thinking ahead for them—spotting opportunities and risks early, and providing personalised, full-service support.
Why is being part of The Marketing Society important for your career?
Professional services isn’t always seen as the most exciting sector—but it will be in the future! Being part of The Marketing Society helps me stay inspired and connected to fresh thinking from outside our industry. It’s a space to grow, challenge assumptions, and learn from brilliant minds who are passionate about marketing’s role in shaping the future.
Why does marketing matter to you?
Because it’s about storytelling, connection, creativity, and impact. Marketing helps organisations articulate who they are, what they stand for, and why they matter. That’s powerful. And for me, the bolder the better!
Tell us something that’s not on your CV
I was a hotel entertainer in the Greek islands during my university summer holidays. I taught water gym, volleyball, and aerobics by day, and sang and danced in musicals by night. I even sold bingo tickets—my first real foray into sales! It was an amazing experience that taught me how to connect with people from all walks of life and brush up on my language skills. I definitely have some good stories from that time!
