Member Interview with Oznur Demir

Oznur Demir

We are delighted to bring you a Member Interview with Oznur Demir, VP, Head of Global Marketing and Communication at Gennius XYZ

What’s your golden rule?

Hear when you listen. It sounds simple, but it’s everything. Too often, we think we’re listening, but we’re really just filtering things through our own assumptions or agendas. Real listening, with the intention to hear, opens doors. The best ideas, unexpected insights, and even solutions to tricky challenges if we’re present enough to catch them.

Who has been your biggest influence?

I’ve been influenced by a collective of leaders I’ve worked with, smart, visionary, but above all, kind. Lucky me! :) — I’ve seen firsthand how leading with kindness, empathy, even in tough moments, leaves a lasting impact. It’s shaped how I want to show up and lead others.

What is your most hated business expression?

I’ve never loved the phrase 'low-hanging fruit'; it makes real work sound too easy. Even the quick wins usually take thought, effort, and teamwork. I’d rather focus on meaningful impact than fruit analogies.

What’s the smartest business idea you’ve ever had?

Professionally, I’ve had many rewarding moments, from launching campaigns that delivered real impact to being recognized across the industry over the last 15 years. But personally, one of the smartest decisions I’ve made was choosing to invest in my own growth, and in the people around me. I’ve been intentional about building a life, not just a career, creating meaningful relationships, great memories, and learning from every interaction. That’s shaped how I lead, how I live, and how I want to show up for others.

Which leader do you admire most and why?

Someone that comes to mind very quickly is Michael Jordan, not just for his talent, but for his mindset. I remember reading an interview where he said, 'I was coachable and aggressive to learn.' That stuck with me. Being open to learning, staying curious, and having that eagerness to grow, I think that’s what keeps us a step ahead.

What is on your mind the most right now as a marketing leader?

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how AI and human creativity can truly coexist. Can we scale both without losing authenticity? How do we make sure we don't lose the human spark in the process? It’s an open question I keep coming back to.

Why is being part of The Marketing Society important for your career?

In the rush of daily work, it’s easy to fall into routine thinking. What I value about The Marketing Society is the chance to step back, connect with a global network of marketers, and stay inspired through events and conversations that push new ideas forward.

Why does marketing matter to you?

Because it fuels my curiosity. I love how it constantly evolves, you're always adapting, testing, and finding new ways to shift perceptions. That mix of creativity, strategy, and change keeps me engaged.

Tell us something that’s not on your CV

When I’m not working, I’m usually chasing waves. I spend as much time as I can in the ocean, it’s where I recharge and stay present. I’m also a certified co-active coach, which has shaped how I lead and connect with others, both personally and professionally.
