Morna McLelland

Managing Director, Stripe Communications

What have been the key highlights of your career so far?

In all honesty, I’ve had lots of brilliant moments throughout my career but if I absolutely had to pick a few they would be working internationally; experiencing different cultures and working practices first hand. Winning some pivotal clients; I work with really brilliant clients across the board, but there are a few wins that were real milestones for Stripe and that are still with us today, and finally helping shape the Stripe business; from joining as employee number 9 to Managing Director in Scotland, it’s been, and still is, an exhilarating journey with too many brilliant, funny, proud and crazy moments to mention individually.

Who are your biggest inspirations in our industry?

I’m really inspired by individuals who are bold, creative, willing to take a risk and do things differently, but at the same time are brave and comfortable enough to be collaborative, inclusive and 100% themselves.

What marketing trends will you be focusing on over the next year or so?

I feel if it’s trends for trends sake it’s not authentic and what’s important to me are campaigns rooted in truth that are totally genuine to the brand. So, while not a trend at all, what I’ll be focusing on is the value of insight and the tools, bright brains and collaborations that take an insightful idea and amplify it into something exceptional.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in marketing?

Be enthusiastic, get involved and make connections. It’s important to give yourself as many opportunities as possible to explore the marketing mix, find out what you like and don’t like and to find a career path that’s right for you by trying new things, putting your hand up for projects, and by connecting with like-minded, brilliant people.
