10 things we learned at our Annual Conference 2015

10 things: Annual Conference

From swapping Hershey's Kisses with Snickers, from unicorn companies to the year of the robot (that will be 2050) and your future, lazy consumer who orders meatball sandwiches and an authentic Mexican wrestling mask from the comfort of their bed.

Here are 10 things learned by our editor, Elen Lewis:

  1. Forget about candlelit dinners. Alain de Botton says external threats are much better for relationships.
  2. 53% of social networkers follow brands and four in five brand followers expect an instant response.
  3. Remember Dan Ariely and the story of the locksmith. It's not about the final thing but about the effort behind it. It's like the IKEA effect - the more difficult the process is, the more people feel attached to it.
  4. We are members of the pancake generation. Our information covers everything thinly, from the octopus to Brazil and the financial crisis; but it is simply information. Knowledge and wisdom is something altogether different.
  5. Elif Shafak said, 'I have nothing to learn from someone who looks like me and someone who sounds like me.'
  6. 'Kultur spiser strategier til Morgenmad.' A Swedish saying that means, 'Culture eats strategy for breakfast.'
  7. The idea of perfection is hard for human beings. Create an environment where people can get better in little steps. Small changes stick for a long time.
  8. Sir Dave Brailsford thinks conflict is good for teams. You need harmony around goals but you don't need harmony in teams.
  9. Every morning, Ron Dennis allows himself a short 'sympathy window' - that moment between opening your eyes and placing your feet on the floor out of bed. That's when he allows himself to revel in self pity about not winning a race.
  10. The ambition of AI is to create a machine with the equivalent planning, learning and reasoning behaviour that makes us human. At this level the machine is not just a tool, it's the last invention humans will ever make.

We were thrilled to share The Marketing Society's Annual Conference with you today and hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
