Pioneers of Digital

Pioneers of Digital: review by Ninder Takhar

Pioneers of Digital profiles 20 inspirational digital leaders who have devised ground breaking digital technologies and businesses to reach new audiences, and includes details on their backgrounds and personal journeys to follow their vision and succeed.

In today’s world, digital strategies are a key component of any integrated marketing plan, and are crucial for reaching, educating and enticing consumers. It can, however, resemble a huge beast for those starting out.

Authors Springer and Carson profile successful leaders from various places around the world, and I liked the regional insight this gave. Examples included Gurbaksh Chahal, who made $200 million via digital marketing by the time he was 30, Zhang Minhui, who directed the online efforts for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Martha Lane Fox, who co-founded Last minute.com.

Pioneers of Digital is applicable to non-profits, public sector, SMEs and large corporations, so you’ll be able to adapt and apply the suggestions to your own work. The advice in the book is particularly suited to those in advertising, digital marketing, social media and search roles, who are in the early-to-middle stages of understanding and executing digital strategies. It’s also useful for those who are inspired by the journeys of industry leaders.

Each biography is given its own chapter, with key lesson summaries at the end, as well as further reading links to the personality’s books, Twitter and Facebook profiles.

The last few chapters cover a range of topics, including how Stephen Fry discovered the power of Twitter, China, India and the Middle East as the next big growth markets for digital consumption and a summary of best practice tips for developing a digital project.

All in all, an inspiring read, and a good introduction to digital approaches and the broader digital market landscape.
