Advisory Board interview with Simon Watson

Director of Digital, Republic of Media

Briefly tell us a little about yourself and what your role involves as Director of Digital at Republic of Media

As Director of Digital for Republic of Media my focus is to champion digital media and drive innovation to produce a best-in-class product and Freethinking award winning omnichannel digital solutions for our clients. A brilliant team help achieve this, and I enjoy supporting them and encouraging them to flourish.

What’s your golden rule - at work and in life?

Work hard, lead with your strengths, work on your weaknesses and achieve a healthy life / work balance. Having non-negotiables in your week may help achieve the latter – one of mine is yoga.

What motivated you to join The Marketing Society Scotland Advisory
Board?

I’ve had a great career so far in marketing and with the experience I have this is an opportunity to give back and work with people and an industry body I admire. Also, in the hope it helps toward a Fellowship 😉

In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge facing your industry today?

Putting my digital media hat on – attribution. There are lots of flaws in solutions out there, and throwing vanity metrics about adds little value.

Which leader do you admire most and why?

Zoe Scaman, Founder of Bodacious. I first saw her speak at MSS Digital Day and her knowledge about emerging tech and trends was fascinating, which was evident in all other attendees as the entire audience were captivated. She backs herself and doesn’t take any s**t.

Why is being part of the Marketing Society important for your career?

The Marketing Society showcases the amazing work its agencies and people create among its close-knit community. As an advocate of agencies outside of London and working for a progressive agency with offices in Edinburgh and Manchester, having work communicated and recognised by an established network on a global scale means a great deal. Also, I work with, and have worked with, brilliant people and The Marketing Society helps maintain those connections and establish new ones.

What would be your one piece of advice to those just starting out in your
industry?

Venture outside your comfort zone – you’ll learn quickly and most likely pleasantly surprise yourself.
